Itaewon EATs ~ Canuck’s, Itaewon The Burger, Rye Post & What a Salad

It used to be a drunken nighttime playground for the thousands of Americans stationed on the nearby Yongsan Army base. As that base and its inhabitants have been slowly migrating 50 miles south to Pyeongtaek, the debauchery and rowdiness of Itaewon has followed the tanks and humvees. 300 Degree ~ A Meter of Delicious Pizza in Seoul

(**Updated September 2018–this restaurant moved to Itaewon near the foreign food supermarkets…)

It may be a gimmick, but a meter of pizza for 38$ is pretty sweet. The quality is good and the size is unbeatable. The tame visitor can order a normal pizza, but the smart money is on the big boy, one full meter of pizza, three choices of pie.

IMG_4440We ordered the classic Italian rucola, (my favorite) classic American style sausage and mushroom and the non-classic but surprisingly tasty sausage and french fry. The fries have a sprinkle of rosemary to add a little flavor. They also have a sweet gorgonzola, bufala cheese, shrimp and more.

In addition to the massive pizza, we ordered some lasagna and meatballs too. I like to add a little meatball to the crust of the pizza. Both were good, pasta was a nice multi-layered affair with egg noodles and homemade sauce. The meatballs were perfect.

That large lunch needed some walking off, and we headed through the traffic to Yongmasan with the dog. The fall colors were blooming, crisp air was breezing through our scarfs and a fake waterfall was perfectly arranged. Just because Mother Nature didn’t bless this mountain with a scenic waterfall doesn’t mean we can’t have one. Evidently, the water can be turned on and off, losing the romance of spontaneity but adding some faux character to Seoul’s concrete jungle. And what day is complete without an double espresso?

Summer Seafood, Spicy Chicken, Mountain Streams & Plenty of Pizza

It’s deep into the sticky Korean summer. High humidity and heavy heat keep us sweating in or out of the air/con. We begin with some lamb-chops. My Style Food Weekend

Someone told me, “Who goes to Italy and eats Chinese food?” I know it doesn’t make sense, but I had already eaten quite a lot of pasta, pizza and seafood, so I wanted to test out some immigrant delights. The best pizza I’ve ever eaten was in Germany. The best lasagna was in Korea. The best Thai was in Laos. The best steak was in Australia. The best sushi was…OK, that was in Japan, but the point remains, good food is everywhere, and I aim to search for it! Having said that, I had a tasty burger, average Indian food and a fabulously meaty pizza this past weekend.

At VOLO: Urband Fast Food (Via Roma 4), I had a rather decent bacon burger and acai with guarana shake.

At Yoga Ristorante (Via Filippo Corridoni 2), I had nothing special, but certainly enough of India’s traditional flavor to satisfy a craving.

A newly discovered gem, Pizzeria La Napa (Via XXX Ottobre), I customized their margherita to my liking: sausage, prosciutto, pepperoni and bufala mozzarella. The box felt like it weighed a kilo.

And lastly, the perfect accoutrement to any breakfast, lunch or dinner in Italy: espresso di Illy.
